In this forthcoming book artists talk with Jorge Lucero about the people, events, places, and things that they learn with and near. This book highlights the moments of teaching and learning amongst (and around) artists, that actively dismantle the paradigm of conventionally understood teaching (where a more seasoned practitioner imparts bits of knowledge to a protégé). Although being taught by an “expert” is an unavoidable—and sometimes crucial—component of how we co-construct our education, Lucero proposes (through this carefully curated assemblage) that horizontality, reciprocity, partnership, and collective emergence offers—not only an underexamined mode of arts education—but a, mostly invisible, art form that produces new expressions and lines of inquiry in an academicized world that aches for conviviality.

-- CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS --

Tell us the story of the people, things, and places that you have learned alongside. We will publish as many of the conversations as possible. Each interview will last one hour and be conducted through zoom. Participants don’t need to prepare anything for this singular session. Each interview will be recorded, but only to allow for transcription (participants have the option of keeping their camera off). The recordings will not be made public and can be discarded after publication if the contributors desire. The transcription and copyediting of the conversations will be done by the Conceptual Art & Teaching team at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Publication date will be Summer of 2022. All participants will receive copies of the book. Interviews will begin January 2022 and continue through May 2022.

Interested? Fill out the form below to give us your information.

We will reach out to you to set up a convenient time to zoom.
